Carnac, Standing Stones & Vannes
We have been wanting to spend some time in Brittany forever, but, as it is so close, we never seem to get there. Our last effort was foiled because the doggie-hotel that the girls like (It has heated floors in winter and a doggie swimming pool in summer) was full. We finally threw caution to the wind and took a day-trip. I've been to Stonehenge, seen the Dolmans and Beehive Huts in Ireland (as well as a lot of single "stones" in Irish fields - bad luck to move them, not to mention the weight of the stone!) but was stunned by the sheer number of stones at Carnac. There were rows and rows and rows of them. Some were lined up perfectly, others appeared more random. Most were huge but some truly enormous. The area they are in goes on for several kilometres.
There are 2 massive fields absolutely chock-a-block with them. It looked like there were bike trails and walking paths; when we go back we'll take our bikes. Regardless of how often I see these things I still marvel at the fact that somehow, humans managed to do so much with so little.
On the map it looks like there are a lot of stones that are scattered throughout the area and not just on the 'route' laid out for us tourists.
Vannes is a lovely old city, filled with colorful half-timbered building more common in Shakespeare country than on this side of the channel. It has a harbor filled to the brim with sailboats, and all of the harbor-side, terraced cafes to sit in and watch the world go by, or, in our case to have a big bowl of 'Moules Frites'. They always taste so much better when you can smell the sea.
An added to bonus to all this was that the temperatures were about 5 degrees (Centigrade) cooler than at home. We'll go back in the off-season when hotels are cheaper, everything is less crowded, and our dogs can get into their favorite hotel.

Awesome.. I'd love to get there one day.
I moved to the USA 6 years ago, and really miss the chance to take day trips to places like that! And I miss my Beloved Glastonbury and Avebury. sigh..

There are so many interesting ancient sites in Britain and Brittany, they were so obviously the same people. How lucky for you to have lived near Glastonbury (Tor?).
